The biggest reason for me getting a NAS (Network Attached Storage) device is for automatic backup system or mirroring system using RAID 1. Because hard drives are not perfect and do break down, it is important to always keep a copy of your files and data. RAID 1 devices will do this with an automatic mirror system, where it essentially keeps a copy disk updated with all the files. In this case there are 2 drives that are 3 TB each. So you get 3 TB of disk space which is mirrored on the other 3 TB disk. If one of the disks ever dies or goes bad, all you have to do is hot swap it out with another 3TB disk drive and you are up and running with backups again.
